A ukrainian negotiators team will meet in the next two days in the United States with US mediators to give new impetus to the negotiations and try to open direct negotiations with representatives of Moscow, announced today the Ukrainian President.
“These are important moments. Our team is in Europe today. Tomorrow [Friday] and the day after tomorrow [Saturday] will be in the United States (USA),” said Volodymyr Zelensky, quoted by the Ukrainian agency Ukrinform during a visit to the site of the Russian attack that on Wednesday killed 22 civilians in the city of Priluki, in the north of the country, where he was accompanied by British Foreign Minister Ed Miliband.
Zelensky specified that the Ukrainian team will meet with American special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, adding that “it also has the participation of a European team.”.
The Ukrainian leader said last weekend that Ukraine accepts the United States proposal for tripartite meetings to find a negotiated solution to the war between representatives of the three countries to be resumed as soon as possible in the United Arab Emirates, as proposed by Washington.
According to the Ukrainian Head of State, Russia has not yet responded to this proposal.
The direct contacts between Ukrainians and Russians, mediated by Washington, were interrupted by the beginning of the war in Iran at the end of February, and have not been resumed since.
With Washington's support, Kiev proposes an immediate ceasefire to negotiate the end of the war, but the Kremlin has so far rejected this proposal and has also shown no interest in the meeting between presidents that Zelensky proposes to hold with Russian counterparts, Vladimir Putin, and North American, Donald Trump.
Friday and Saturday contacts between Ukrainian negotiators and US mediators will take place after the Russian attacks have killed more than 60 people in Ukraine in the last 24 hours.
Ukraine has been counting on financial and armament aid from Western allies since Russia invaded the country on 24 February 2022.
The attacks have been intensifying in recent months on both sides of the front, making an increasing number of civilian victims, and negotiations between the two sides are at a standstill.
