A European Union (EU) today welcomed the repeal in Hungary of the anti-LGBTIQ+ laws adopted under the leadership of ultranationalist Viktor Orbán, highlighting the realignment of Budapest with “common values”.
“ LGBTIQ+ rights are fundamental rights in the EU. Today, we welcome the adoption by the Hungarian National Assembly of a law repealing the anti-LGBTIQ+ provisions introduced by the previous government,” European Commissioners for Equality, Hadja Lahbib, and Democracy, Justice and the rule of law, Michael McGrath, said in a statement.
“ We welcome this important sign of commitment to our common values. The EU is a Union of equality, dignity and fundamental rights for all,” Commissioners said.
The Hungarian parliament today amended legislation linking paedophilia to homosexuality and banned discussions on homosexual relations in schools and television programs during children's exhibition hours.
The legislation, introduced in 2021 by the Government of ultranationalist Viktor Orbán, was modified by 139 votes in favour 51, marking the first significant repeal of restrictions imposed by the former Prime Minister to the LGBT+ community since the leader of the conservative pro-EU executive, Peter Magyar, took office in May.
Legal reform eliminates several provisions of the so-called ‘child protection law’, which the Court of Justice of the European Union considered to violate EU values and led the European Commission to open proceedings against Hungary.
