Retail sales increased in August by 0.8% in the euro area and 1.2% in the European Union (EU) compared to the same month, according to data released today by Eurostat.

Nthe comparison with July, the indicator grew slightly 0.1% both in the euro area and in the EU.
According to the EU statistical service, compared to August 2025, the highest increases were observed in Sweden (7.7%), Cyprus (7.5%) and Estonia (6.0 %).
At the opposite extreme, Malta (-2.4%), Spain (-0.6%), Italy (-0.5%) and Germany (-0.4 %) recorded annual losses in retail sales.
In the chain change, Romania (2.3%), Sweden (1.4%) and Germany (1.3%) showed the most important rises, and Luxembourg (9.4%), Malta (1.9%) and Latvia (1.4%) showed the greatest advances.
In Portugal, the volume of retail sales rose by 2.2% compared to the same month of 2025 and decreased by 0.7% compared to July.
