A president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, today listed measures taken to control energy prices, including joint purchases in the European Union (EU).

In statements at the press conference at the end of the European Council, which took place Thursday and today in Brussels, Ursula von der Leyen mentioned, among the agreed measures, “the release of 100 million barrels of oil and diesel over the next four months”, to be managed by the International Energy Agency.

The leader of the Community executive also announced, in the short term, aggregate energy purchases by the Member States of the European bloc.

In the medium term, Ursula von der Leyen recalled the commitment to independence and transition to clean energy, to “accessible, clean and internally produced energy sources — nuclear energy and renewable energy”.

The European leader also reiterated the defence of a better and more efficient energy distribution network.
