A president of the European Commission today expressed his support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the target of Donald Trump's criticism, and declared himself in favour of Kiev's call for a truce in the attacks on energy infrastructure.

In a message released on social network X after a conversation with Ukrainian head of state, Ursula Von der Leyen said he supported “fullly President Zelensky’s call for a ceasefire to protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia.”.

“ All my support for President Zelensky, who leads the fight for the freedom of her people,” added the European leader, quoted by the French news agency Agence France Presse.

The statements of the European Commission representative come at a time of tension between Washington and Kiev: on Saturday, American President Donald Trump criticized Zelensky for Ukrainian operations against Russian refineries and even suggested that Ukraine should have “a new leader”.

Donald Trump accused the Ukrainian President of hindering an agreement to end the war and, as of today, he announced on his social network Truth Social what he described as an immediate “energy breakup” between Russia and Ukraine.

According to Trump, the two parties would have agreed to stop attacks on energy infrastructure, an information that was denied by Zelensky.

The Ukrainian President said that the announcement was “new” to you, but ensured that Ukraine will accept such a truce if Moscow also agrees.

“ If the Russians accept an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will accept it,” he said.

Ukraine has been defending for months a suspension of attacks on energy infrastructure, claiming that this would help to ensure essential services such as electricity, heating and water supply during the winter.

Zelensky accepts elections, but imposes condition: 60-day ceasefire

Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, responded to Donald Trump, stating that the country could hold elections if Russia agreed to a total ceasefire of 60 days. Zelensky stressed that the choice of the leader is an internal decision of Ukraine.
