A new York stock exchange closed down today, after knowing worse than expected inflation figures and new concerns about the indebtedness of artificial intelligence operators (AI).

The results of the session indicate that the selection index Dow Jones Industrial Average yielded 0.09%, the technology Nasdaq retreated 1.88% and the extended S&P500 lost 1.11%.

Angelo Kourkafas, from Edward Jones, questioned by AFP, mentioned “a double blow” to the scholarship square.

Known before the opening of the stock exchange, the September consumer price index showed an annual rise of 3.7%, more than anticipated, but above August.

The rise was fuelled, but even excluding food and energy, sectors considered volatile, inflation continued to accelerate, with 2.6%.

This information “enforces the idea that the rise in the Federal Reserve reference interest rate in September was not an isolated event,” Kourkafas said.

The central bank the US had then raised the rate to contain the rise in inflation, a novelty since 2023. Analysts expect at least another rise by the end of the year.

If visible inflation in the producer’s price index, expected for Thursday, “also retain a rise in the direction of the rise, then this can tilt the balance” in favor of a further rise in the meeting scheduled for the end of October, Bill Adams, of Fifth Third Commercial Bank, said.

On the other hand, Wall Street suffered from CoreWeave's problems.

This company, which builds data centres dedicated to AI, has devalued 15.46%, due to concern about its indebtedness.

To finance its infrastructure, it was in debt of $35 billion. This amount is deemed to be too heavy by investors, which require ever higher premiums to hold these claims.

Today, the income provided by CoreWeave debt securities, to be reimbursed in 2031 and 2032, amounted to 15%.

Like CoreWeave, its competitor Nebius lost 10,08%. The Oracle conglomerate yielded 8.82% and the Nvidia mastodon, which provides the semiconductors used by CoreWeave, retreated 3.16%.

Given a high-rate environment, investors “take note that the cost of debt increases and that the realisation of any AI infrastructure entails considerable costs,” Kourkafas said.
