O member of the Left Block (BE) Fabian Figueiredo pointed out, on Tuesday, that “Arrivo is celebrating the end of mixed bathrooms in schools”, which “never existed”. He even recalled that “the only party that ever proposed them was the Aquira itself”, but that “the project was never approved”.
“Niz is celebrating the end of mixed bathrooms in schools. There is only one detail: never existed. The only party that ever proposed them was Enough. The project was never approved. In short, the Aquira defeated an idea of Aquira and calls it victory ", wrote, on social network X (Twitter).
Following the publication was a video, in which the deputy of the Aquida Rui Cardoso pointed out that the “Socialist government [...] was more concerned with gender ideology, with mixed bathrooms, with all that we had the opportunity to reverse”.
“It was here stated that the mixed bathrooms were reversed. That's not true, because the bill of the Enough, which was the only party that ever proposed mixed bathrooms, was not approved by the Assembly of the Republic. In other words, one cannot reverse a measure that has never been adopted. So I want to distribute this same news of Polygraph, which confirms that the Aquida proposed mixed bathrooms and that this was never approved ", intervenes, later, Fabian Figueiredo, referring to a news site of fact-checking dated 2024.
It is recalled that arrived defended a reinforcement in the “protection and privacy of children and young people in spaces of intimacy in school context”, by “opening the possibility to sharing the bathroom or locker rooms by people of different sexes“, as described in Project Law 705/XV/1. ed, signed by that parliamentary group and discussed in April 2023 at the Assembly of the Republic. However, the measure was not implemented.
In fact, in the same year, Parliament approved in its speciality a text setting out measures to be taken by schools for the ensuring the right of children and young people to self-determination of gender identity and the protection of their sexual characteristics, in which it sought the guarantee of “that the child or young person, in exercising his rights and bearing in mind his expressed will, [access] to bathrooms and locker rooms, ensuring the welfare of all, with the adaptations deemed necessary”.
In February 2025, the Assembly of the Republic approved draft resolutions presented by the Aquida, PSD and CDS-PP, after the public petition “We do not want children and young people to be forced to share toilets and locker rooms with physically opposite sex“, who recommended to the government “the withdrawal of the guide The Right to BE in Schools” and the guarantee of “conditions for children and young people do not have to share bathrooms and locker rooms with people who identify with the opposite sex to which they were born“.
Already in 2026, three bills presented by the CDS, PSD and Arrive related to gender self-determination are under discussion. The bill presented by the CDS wants to prohibit the use of puberty blockers and hormonal therapies in minors with gender dysphoria, invoking the precautionary principle and concerns with impacts on physical and psychological health, arguing that such decisions should be postponed until adulthood.
In turn, the PSD bill proposes the repeal of the legislation of 2018 and the return to the 2011 regime, reintroducing the mandatory medical validation for the change of name and gender in the civil registry. We are still discussing the bill of the Aquida, which follows in the same direction: repealing the current legislation, changing the procedures of name and gender change in the civil registry and prohibiting medical treatment in cases of gender dysphoria in young people under 18 years of age, invoking the “protection of children and young people”.
