Now it's official. Manchester United reveals how much it cost to fire Amorim

Ruben Amorim would have been entitled to compensation of almost EUR 19.5 million after being fired from the Manchester United technical command, but the fact that he accepted the invitation from AC Milan drastically reduced that value.

O Manchester United presented, at the beginning of the afternoon of Wednesday, the Report and Accounts for the last sport season of 2025/26, in which it presented net losses of around £43 million (EUR 50 million), that is another £10 million (11.6 million) for the previous period.

The Red Devils presented record revenue of GBP 677.6 million (EUR 788.5 million), largely due to the fact that they finished the Premier League in third place and won the direct discharge for the Champions League. Numbers that, however, did not arrive to cover the ‘monstrous’ expenses that the club assumed.

As a result, current debts amount to GBP 471.9 million (EUR 549.2 million) from 2024/25 to GBP 577.6 million (EUR 672.2 million). This, despite the cost containment policy that has been imposed since the end of 2023, when Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner.

To contribute to this outcome was largely an investment of GBP 63.5 million 73.9 million in the acquisition of the land on which the ‘new’ Old Trafford will be built, a state-of-the-art stadium that promises to be able to house anything like 100,000 supporters and will also have a commercial zone.

How much did it cost to fire Ruben Amorim?

This document also helps to put an end to doubts about the amount Manchester United had to disburse to move on to Ruben Amorim's resignation last January following a first half of a season in which sports results fell short of expectations.

Since the contract between the two parties did not cover any termination clause and no agreement was reached with a view to the end of the agreement, Red Devils would have no choice but to pay the GBP 16.7 million (EUR 19.4 million) to which the latter and its technical team would be entitled, by June 2027, in the form of an order.

However, as last summer, the Portuguese coach accepted the invitation to succeed Massmiliano Allegri in the technical command of AC Milan, this ‘sangria’ was halted and compensation amounted to close to GBP 8.2 million (9.5 million), which represents a saving of GBP 8.5 million (9.9 million).

“ We are on the right track”

Despite significant financial losses, Manchester United executive director Omar Berrada does not see cause for alarm: “We are pleased to have guaranteed record revenue and adjusted EBITDA, which demonstrates the patent force of our business, particularly in a season without European football.”.

“ This demonstrates the direct impact of the work we have been doing over the last two years. Although these results confirm that we are on the right track, we will continue to adopt a disciplined approach, to ensure that our finances remain sustainable”, said the Spanish.

“ With this financial sustainability in mind, we strengthened our teams, as men's football, as men's football, during the summer transfer market, and our men's football team saw Champions League football return to Old Trafford. Our other main focus area is the plan to develop a new stadium”, he concluded.
