O president of the European Council, António Costa, was criticised this week by the German government after giving an interview to the political publication in which he spoke about the negotiations on the next Community budget.
In the interview concerned, the former Portuguese Prime Minister argued that the European Union (EU) should create new taxes to guarantee own resources, in particular for goods which are not taxed at national level. One of the data examples is related with the digital asset sector (crypt). Costa explained that the creation of these taxes would be crucial to avoid drastic cuts in the European budget.
But the prospect did not please the German Minister for European Affairs, Gunther Krichbaum, who said that in Brussels he said, quoted by the Politico, that the interview in question “did not help much” and called for “more realism” in the budget.
“It remains to know if Mr. Costa is not completely out of touch with reality at this time,” Krichbaum told journalists on his way to a meeting.
The ruler further pointed out that “national budgets are under enormous pressure, and everyone knows that heaven is not the limit.”.
