O a 59-year-old high-ranking police officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was arrested on Monday, needed the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a press release.

According to local media, the lieutenant general was detained at an entertainment club in a luxury neighborhood in Sandton, Johannesburg (north).

The accused faces “accusation related to the alleged sexual capture of a child under 16 between July and August 2026, as well as the alleged rape of an 18-year-old girl.”.

The alleged rape occurred at a hotel in Sandton in May 2026, police reported.

The officer is expected to appear today at the Randburg Court of Magistrates in Johannesburg.

The interim Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, condemned the alleged conduct of the accused “veemently”.

“ Police are entrusted with the protection of women and children. They themselves cannot be implicated in behaviors that undermine this responsibility. While the country continues to face the plague of gender violence and femicide, there can be no place in the police service for anyone who allegedly abuses their position or violates the rights of women and children,” said Dimpane.

“Our commitment to combat gender violence and feminicide must also be applied within our own organisation. The post, office or seniority cannot put anyone above the law,” added the interim SAPS Commissioner.

According to the police, the arrest shows that SAPS “will not protect members facing serious charges of criminal conduct, regardless of their position or position”.

Last year, the South African authorities officially declared gender violence as a “national disaster”.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of gender violence in the world, according to the UN Women.
