O Angolan government announced today an investment of more than EUR 200 million to bring electricity to more than half a million inhabitants of the provinces of Luanda and Icolo and Bengo.

The authorization of the expenditure for strengthening the power grid is contained in a presidential order signed by the President of the Republic and Chief Executive, João Lourenço, released today.

The Head of State authorised “an expenditure of EUR 201.2 million for the implementation of the first phase of the Electric Network Expansion Project in the provinces of Luanda and Icolo and Bengo”.

The investment, according to information from the Angolan Government, “predicts the electrification of more than 125,000 dwellings and (will) benefit more than 500,000 inhabitants”.

The presidential order includes, in this first phase, the works of Lot A, which covers the localities of Porto Seco, Funda, Polo Industrial de Viana, Zona Verde and Mundo, according to the information disclosed.

The construction of three new substations with capacity of 80 MegaVolt (MVA) each and the expansion of the substation of the Industrial Pole of Viana, with the installation of a new transformer of 40 MVA.

The reinforcement will represent “an increase of approximately 280 MVA of installed nominal processing power”.

The intervention covers 103 kilometres of electrical infrastructure, including the construction of 55 kilometres of high-voltage airlines, 60 Kilovolt (kV), and the modernisation of 48 kilometres of medium-voltage airlines, 30 kV.

The project will be awarded through the “opening of a simplified procurement procedure”, according to the Government of Angola, which justifies the criterion “on the basis of external funding”.

The new investment will be included in the Public Investment Program of the General Budget of the State and will be under the supervision of the Minister of Energy and Waters, João Baptista Borges.
