Dand according to the data released today by the European Central Bank (ECB), in the 12 months ending in June this figure presented a fall from the EUR 305,000 million recorded a year earlier, when it had then represented 2% of gross domestic product (GDP).
This reduction was attributed by the ECB to the reduction in the surplus in trade in goods and to the increase in the deficit in secondary income.
In June alone, the current account of the euro area had a surplus of EUR 35,000 million, an increase of 12.9% in homologous terms and of 34.6% in chain.
In the last month of the first half, trade in goods had a surplus of EUR 18,000 million (EUR 24,000 million in the same month), EUR 17,000 million in primary income (against EUR 8,000 million in June 2025) and EUR 16,000 million in services.
In June, secondary income had a deficit of EUR 16,000 million, compared with EUR 15,000 million a year earlier.
In June, net acquisitions of portfolio investment securities of euro area residents vis-à-vis non-residents totaled 820,000 million euros, compared with 862,000 a year earlier.
Net acquisitions of portfolio investment securities by non-residents amounted to EUR 1.12 billion in the 12-month cumulative (above EUR 803,000 million in the same period).
