Vangelis Pavlidis was the target of strong greed in the summer and led Benfica to advance for the renewal of the contract, which should be made official soon. Still, the fact that the Greek goalie becomes the best-paid player of the red squad does not drive away interested clubs and from England there is already a candidate for... January.
According to the newspaper The game, in this Saturday's edition, Tottenham is looking for a spearhead and is very interested in Pavlidis, which this season counts 14 goals in 13 games serving Benfica.
The team commanded by Roberto De Zerbi will attack the winter market and can go knock on Benfica's door which, it is said, in the summer even refused an offer of 40 million fixed euros, plus 10 per goal, placed on the table by Fenerbahçe, Turkey.
The same newspaper ensures that Tottenham has been monitoring Pavlidis' performance in an exhaustive manner, and is present in various Benfica games.
The outlines of the new contract
Although I have already agreed on a new contract, Pavlidis will not prolong the same. In other words, the 27-year-old still has a contract until 2029, but it was the subject of a significant wage increase.
Last Wednesday, the Greek sports press reported that Pavlidis would move to a level higher than three million euros per year, thus becoming the best paid player of the entire squad at Marco Silva's orders.
This represents an increase of about 50% of the figures that the Hellenic international currently receives in the Light, and appears as a response to the harassment that took place in the summer transfer market.
The Greek international, hired in 2024 to the Dutch of AZ Alkmaar, for 18 million euros, has always surpassed the mark of the 30 goals in the two seasons already completed in Benfica and at this time is well underway to hit the same bar again.
Praised by former world champion
In focus on Benfica, Pavlidis is also giving attention to the service of the Greek selection, which recently had four commitments to tell the League of Nations.
The Benfica player did not score goals, but was focused on both wins. Against Serbia (2-1) saw and against Germany (1-0) deserved praise from a former world champion.
Bastian Schweinsteiger, former player of Bayern Munich and Manchester United, was very disillusioned with the performance of the German team and eventually highlighted the Greek talent in front of the attack.
“We are no longer a top selection. Now we're mediocre. We no longer have players who make a difference. If we look at Greece today, Karetsas, Tzolis or Pavlidis in the front. Those were, for me, the players who made a difference today. We don’t have these players,” Schweinsteiger said on the ARD antenna.
Back in Benfica, Pavlidis is now on batteries aimed at Victory SC, opponent on the 8th journey of the I League, but with Tottenham alert.
