O canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced today that he would support “firmly” an “energy breakfire” between Ukraine and Russia during a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.

Carney “expressed Canada’s firm support for this agreement” and appealed to Russia to respect it, according to a statement by the Canadian leader regarding the conversation between the two American leaders quoted by the Agence France Presse news agency.

The note also states that Canada “will continue to maximise its exports of oil and gas oil to the United States”, with volumes already exceeding a million barrels of diesel per day.

The Canadian position arises shortly after the British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, also announces his support for Trump’s call for a “lasting energy strike without delay” between Russia and Ukraine.

In a publication on Social Network X, Andy Burnham argues that this is “the best way to restore the supply of global energy and fuel markets”.

Donald Trump announced today that an “energy break-up” between the two countries came into force, ensuring that both parties agreed to stop attacks on the opponent’s energy infrastructure.

However, neither Moscow nor Kiev officially confirmed the agreement at the time of the announcement. Ukrainian President Zelensky said he was even surprised by Trump's statement, however ensuring that Ukraine is willing to respect such a truce if Russia does the same.

In recent weeks, Russia has hit Ukrainian power stations and power distribution networks, while Ukraine has intensified drone attacks against refineries and other Russian oil installations.

However, after the announcement of the truce, the Ukrainian authorities have already accused Moscow of continuing the attacks on an electric power station in Kharkiv, which was reached hours after Trump's statement on the energy ceasefire.
