A France “supports in full the call for a genuine energy truce, to which Ukraine is willing,” said French President Emmanuel Macron today, after American counterpart Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow.

“ At the moment, Russia continues to reject it, intensifying its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in the last few hours,” Macron noted on social network X, shortly after the White House leader announced an energy truce, which the Ukrainian President says he is unaware of, although he is ready to accept it.

The French leader added that “France will continue alongside Ukraine and President Zelensky,” not to mention directly the suggestion made by Donald Trump on Saturday for a change by the Ukrainian President, nor the US agreement with Russia on diesel supply despite sanctions against Moscow.

Similarly, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke today on the phone with Zelensky to convey support to the Ukrainian leader’s calls for a ceasefire when the war entered its “blackest” phase.

Donald Trump announced today that Russia and Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire for attacks on energy infrastructure in both countries, although he did not provide any details.

“ From now on, there is an energy ceasefire [written in capital letters] in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides agreed. Don’t break it!”, wrote the leader of the White House on his social network Truth Social.

Shortly after the announcement, Zelensky told the portal Axios who are unaware of the energy ceasefire with Russia.

“The announcement of this ceasefire was a novelty to me. But if the Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree,” said journalist Barak Ravid of the US portal who published these statements on the X network.

Later, Zelensky said on social media Facebook that he is awaiting clarifications from Washington.

“Ukraine supports the ceasefire and it is important that Russia also supports it. We await details of the American side ", declared.

Moscow's reaction to Trump's announcement is not yet known, after on Saturday the spokesperson of the Kremlin, Dmitri Peskov, stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin, “accepted with understanding” unspecified proposals from the US counterpart on Ukraine.

On the same day, the U.S. President again directed accusations to Zelensky and argued that it was time for Ukraine to have a new president, in a new episode of tension between both since the explosive meeting in the Oval Office in February 2025.

The White House leader suggested that Zelensky did not do enough to end the war and contributed to the high fuel prices in the United States due to Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries.

In response, the Ukrainian President said that his country could hold elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.

“ With all due respect to President Trump, it is up to our society, our people, to choose one or the other leader,” the Ukrainian leader continued, adding that a vote during the war would be illegal in the light of the martial law in force from the beginning the Russian invasion in February 2022, and only possible with security guarantees so that citizens could vote.

Prior to the announcement of the ceasefire, the US administration temporarily authorised on Friday the sale, delivery, unloading and import of Russian-made gas oil, including its entry into the US market until April 7, 2027, despite the sanctions imposed on Moscow.

The measure was justified by Donald Trump as an effort to curb fuel price escalation since the start of the Israeli-American offensive against Iran on February 28, and which threatens Republican performance in the mid-term elections to the US Congress in early November.

In reaction, Zelensky considered that Russia “expressed its gratitude” to Washington for lifting oil sanctions through new bombings against its country and referred to an “unselfish” decision.

The diplomatic efforts under Washington mediation to end more than four years of Russian offensive in Ukraine are currently at a standstill.

In recent months, Russia and Ukraine have intensified a long-range air war, while their armies remain without significant progress on the various front lines.

The September visit by American emissaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and subsequently, in an unprecedented manner, Kiev did not result in any concrete announcement.

A Ukrainian delegation was in Miami on Saturday for talks, but returned to Kiev without any progress having been made.
