O King Felipe VI said today that Ceuta and Melilla are “an unrenounceable part of Spain” and that both the Spanish State and the European Union must maintain good relations with Morocco.

“Ceuta is Spain and Ceuta is Europe,” said the Spanish Head of State, who spoke in Ceuta, on his first visit to the city, an enclave in North Africa, bordering Morocco, where at the end of July more than 70,000 people entered illegally within 24 hours.

Felipe VI described what happened at the end of July as a violation of the Spanish and European borders and said it was “a shock for everyone”.
