Wang stated on Thursday that the relations between Beijing and Washington have followed, “in general”, the course set by Chinese President Xi Jinping and the American counterpart Donald Trump, and that this “corresponds to the expectations of the international community”, according to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The head of Chinese diplomacy said that “diplomacy among heads of state” functions as an anchor of the relations between the two largest world economies and called for the strengthening of communication, the management of differences and respect for the “fundamental interests” of each party.

The Chinese statement did not detail Rubio's statements during the conversation.

The contact takes place in the final line of preparations for a possible meeting between Xi and Trump in Washington, although China has not officially confirmed the Chinese leader's visit to the United States, scheduled for September 24, according to US authorities.

After Trump’s visit to Beijing in May, the two governments presented “constructive strategic stability” as a framework to contain rivalry and prevent trade, technological and geopolitical disputes from evolving into a broader confrontation.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced this week that he will be meeting this weekend with Chinese Deputy Prime Minister He Lifeng to address economic and trade issues before the summit, while the two countries negotiate a prolongation of the trade truce agreed in the South Korean city of Busan last year.

The truce eased part of the mutual tariff pressure and suspended some restrictions imposed by both parties, although relations remain marked by differences in areas such as trade, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, rare earths, Taiwan, cybersecurity and US sanctions against Chinese entities linked to Iran.

The Hong Kong South China Morning Post reported on Thursday that a Chinese business delegation will be able to accompany Xi, including executives from BYD car manufacturer, Xiaomi technology manufacturer and CATL battery manufacturer.

The initiative would recall Trump's visit to Beijing in May, when the American President traveled with Tesla, Apple, Nvidia and Boeing officials.

The U.S. administration is also considering bringing together heads of major artificial intelligence companies during Xi's visit, according to the CNN television chain, in an unconfirmed meeting that will be able to count on the executive presidents of OpenAI, Sam Altman, and Nvidia, Jensen Huang, to discuss the future of technology and associated risks.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang and Rubio also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East without further details.
