Plink minus 19 people died and 20 were injured on Saturday in Calcutta, east of India, in a panic escape, caused by a sudden heavy rain, from a place where a Hindu religious ceremony took place, announced the authorities.
The crowd participated in the festival of Durga Puja and “began to push, pull and run, some fell and generated a stir that eventually provoked a panic race,” said a senior police officer present at the scene.
Suvendhu Adhikari, senior in charge of the state of West Bengal, said that among the 19 dead was at least one 7 year old child.
The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has already presented “coldonences to grieving families” and wished “quick improvements to the wounded”.
The uncontrolled movements of crowds that end up causing deaths are frequent when there are large gatherings in India, especially during religious parties, due to poor organization and security failures.
In 2025, in one of these situations, during a religious feast, 30 people died and dozens were injured.
