A rail traffic on the Douro Line between Marco de Canaveses and Peso da Régua will be interrupted between November 3 and March 24, with road transshipment, due to the modernization and electrification works in this section.

According to information released by the Infrastructures of Portugal (IP), the recovery of the circulation between Marco (Oporto district) and Régua ( Vila Real district) is scheduled for March 25, 2027.

The conditioning to rail traffic in this section takes place within the framework of the modernization of the Douro Line, between the stations of Marco de Canaveses and Peso da Régua, which started in 2025, with a suspension of five months and work scheduled for the winter period.

The works were scheduled for winter because they correspond to the time of less demand for rail services, both by regular passengers and by tourists, thus minimizing the impacts of the suspension of circulation.

During the interruption period, alternative road transport will be ensured, with stops in the localities served by the train line, on a road route that was defined in conjunction with the local authorities of the region.

With an investment of EUR 110 million, the project provides for the complete electrification of the section, with about 47 kilometres, and the work is estimated to take place for three years (36 months), with three periods of interruption of the rail traffic.

This is the second scheduled interruption period.

Currently, the electrification of the Douro Line is completed until Marco de Canaveses.

The IP appreciates the understanding of the constraints arising from these interventions that it said are “essential to modernize and strengthen safety in railway infrastructure”.
