The 240mm multi-launch guided rocket test was carried out on Tuesday, “under the plan to modernise artillery and missile forces,” KCNA indicated.

According to the news agency, rockets are capable of reaching targets located 100 kilometres away through a ballistic flight mode and targets 115 kilometres in a combined way.

“ The test showed the impact accuracy and superiority of the wide-range rockets,” KCNA pointed out, adding that development “ensures a significant change in the fire power capacity at the southern border.”.

The agency stressed the “need to concentrate the most lethal and destructive attack forces” on the border with neighboring South Korea.

North Korea and South Korea are still technically at war, as the 1950-1953 conflict ended with an armistice, not with a peace treaty.

On Tuesday, KCNA said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had been following the test of a “new type” weapon on Sunday without further details.

On Sunday, South Korea and Japan had accounted for the launch by the North of two short-range ballistic missiles, a few hours apart, towards the Japan Sea.

Seoul denounced a “serious act” and Tokyo sent a “vehement protest” to Pyongyang.

According to KCNA, the authority responsible for the missile program “successfully tested a new type of weapon” on Sunday in the presence of Kim Jong-un.

Pyongyang did not provide more accurate information about the characteristics of the weaponry.

Kim welcomed the shooting, describing it as “no doubt an impressive demonstration of ultra-modern defense technology and represented clear progress in modernising her armed forces,” according to KCNA.

In the photos released by the agency, the North Korean leader appears accompanied by teenage daughter Kim Ju-ae, considered by South Korean intelligence a potential successor in the regime's leadership.

One of the images shows both observing a screen with the inscription of the Hwasong-11 missile, which would suggest that this type of hypersonic ballistic missile could have been tested.

The screen also indicated a range of 908.2 kilometers. However, experts cited by the South Korean news agency Yonhap raised the possibility that Pyongyang changed the number to present the test as successful.

The South Korean presidential office urged North Korea to immediately suspend ballistic missile launches, prohibited by UN Security Council resolutions, and added that Seoul held an emergency meeting of the National Security Council to discuss the situation.
