O South Korea's Joint Chiefs, quoted by international agencies, stated that the launch took place on the eastern coast of North Korea, but did not provide further details.

The launch takes place at a time when North Korea is continuing a series of weapons tests, even after US President Donald Trump recently reduced the size of a military exercise with South Korea in an apparent attempt to relaunch diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Earlier this month, North Korea claimed to have carried out a joint exercise of real fire involving missiles, artillery, and drones, which, according to Pyongyang, demonstrated a “heavy destructive power.”.

The North Korean leader has focused on expanding his nuclear arsenal after his previous high-risk diplomacy with Trump failed in 2019.

Last month Trump ordered the Pentagon to “substantial reduction” of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise with South Korea. Trump invoked what he classified as a good relationship with Kim, who considers these exercises invasion trials.
