O leader of the Israeli opposition bloc, Gadi Eisenkot, today publicly asked the President, Isaac Herzog, to instruct him to form a government on Sunday to end the “existent threat” that became the still prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a statement released on social media, Centrist Eisenkot maintained that the Likud party-led coalition of the outgoing prime minister was in practice defeated in the legislative elections of 27 October in Israel, although Netanyahu's party was the most voted.

Although he has not confirmed that he has sufficient support to form the next Israeli executive, the leader of the Yashar party! stressed that there are currently 74 Members, including those of his own party, who “do not put any trust in the Prime Minister”.

He also ensured that the negotiations he has been holding since the elections with the opposition parties to Netanyahu are progressing well, claiming to be charged by the President to form the next government.

“ Many meetings took place; some became public, others did not. Some happened just a few hours ago (...). We made important progress and made decisive progress,” Eisenkot said in a long message published on social network X.

Although, in the last few hours, until the Arab-Israeli parties expressed their support for Eisenkot in principle, the leader of the anti-Netanyahu bloc warned that any party wishing to join its coalition should accept its four “fundamental principles”.

These include “the recognition of the State of Israel as a democratic Jewish State” and “the recognition of the Palestinian Islamist movement] Hamas as a terrorist organisation” with a view to “the dismantling of its military power”.

In any case, Eisenkot presented himself as the only possible option to rescue Israel from a “true, tangible and dangerous emergency,” arguing that “the current government threatens, in its most basic essence, the very existence of Israeli democracy.”.

“ A situation in which an interim prime minister in a minority, who has lost so dramatically the confidence of the people, continues ahead of the security system and the forces of order, is so dangerous that it should not last for a single day”, he concluded.
