ANDis filled another “chair” in the platoon of Formula 1 to 2027. Alex Albon and Williams announced the renovation for another year this tuesday (18 august).

The Anglo-Thai arrived in 2022 after a year outside and has since been a key part in the structure. At the age of 30, he is the racer who competed most with the formation of Grove – a record that reached this year's Barcelona GP, surpassing Nigel Mansell. It's already 100 races against the 1992 World Champion 95.

Last year, Alexander Albon had his best season since he arrived, adding 73 points to finish in eighth place. He did better in 2020 by Red Bull (was seventh with 105 points) and the previous year by Red Bull and former Toro Rosso (eighth with 92 points).

The year 2026 is not going so well, with only five points so far, but it has been at teammate Carlos Sainz’s level – adding up to just one point less than Spanish.

In an interview published on Williams' website, Alex Albon devalued these results and stressed his conviction in the project: “I think that a difficult year does not represent the full picture i have with Williams. I saw progress year after year. Of course, so far it's been a frustrating year, but.. it doesn't make me believe this team, in your ambitions and what I believe you can achieve. Despite being a difficult year, the response of the team in the factory and the work that has been done to understand our problems has been enormous.”.

James Vowles, chief of staff, said in a statement: “Alex has been a leader of this transformation project since day one and we have much to do that we are determined to achieve. Alex is one of the best pilots in the platoon and he knows better than anyone of the enormous improvements made in recent years. Renew with it shows the confidence that we both have in the direction we are going.”.

There's still a lot to decide in the platoon

At the moment, there are more officially open vacancies than those filled in the Formula 1 squad for 2027. Since Williams, Carlos Sainz still has no contract, but Racing News 365 has written in the last few days that renewal may be coming soon.

In Mercedes, neither Andrea Kimi Antonelli nor George Russell are linked, just as it happens other teams that do not have any confirmed drivers – Audi, Aston Martin, Haas and Racing Bulls. In the cases of Audi and Haas, the current pilots signed multiannual contracts in 2025, but the actual duration was not disclosed.

Then, as is now the case with Williams, there are other formations with only one pilot under contract for 2027: Alpine and Red Bull, respectively with Pierre Gasly and Max Verstappen bound until 2028.

No more unfilled cockpits in the Cadillac (which holds Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas), Ferrari (Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton) and McLaren (Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri).

Formula 1 format under discussion: “It should be 24 races, 24 sprints”

Alpine's technical advisor ensured that Formula 1 needs to be even more attractive and that, therefore, there must be sprint races in all races of the season.
