FC Porto chases the damage to end disaster in Spain

FC Porto visits Real Betis tomorrow, Wednesday, in play of the Champions League, with the historical record being a concern. Dragons only won five of the 25 games played in Spain, the last of which was 12 years ago.

Lundefeated leader in the I Liga, FC Porto already has batteries pointed to the Champions League, meeting Betis on Wednesday. The Farioli dragons will travel to Seville, with the aim of collecting the first points in the million-dollar race, but with a past... that weighs.

FC Porto has a negative history of visits to the neighboring country, where it no longer wins in official games since November 2014, almost 12 years ago.

The blue and white team even took the break for selections to play a private game with the Deportivo, moving to the Coruña, and won by 3-1. However, such a victory does not erase the unfavourable history of dragons in Spain, at a time when it is also necessary to respond to the defeat with Manchester City (0-2), consented to the start of Champions.

In a total of 25 official games played on Spanish soil, FC Porto only won five. Still, there is a fact that jumps into view: one of the five victories was precisely in Seville, in front of Sevilla, the city rival of Betis. FC Porto and Betis will also face each other for the first time in an official game.

Farioli also does not hold good memories of Spain

The history of FC Porto in Spain is mostly constituted by the clashes before Barcelona (five), Real Madrid (five) and Atlético de Madrid (six), but has also measured forces with Valencia, Athletic, Deportivo, Málaga, Villarreal, Sevilla and Espanyol.

The most recent was at the end of November 2023, when the team then commanded by Sérgio Conceição went to the Estadi Olympic Lluís Companies – a house borrowed from Barcelona during the works of Camp Nou – to be ‘verted’ by the Portuguese João Cancelo and João Félix (2-1).

Since then, a lot has changed in FC Porto, starting with the coach. Farioli started the second season in the Dragon and has made an immaculate course in the championship, but needs to take a step of affirmation in European competitions, after not having gone beyond the final rooms of the Europa League last season, falling at the feet of Nottingham Forest.

Farioli also does not have good memories of travel to Spain. During his trip to Ajax, the Italian coach played only one official game in the country, losing 0-2 on the Real Sociedad field in November 2024, in the Europe League group stage.

Who are the resistors from 2023?

Looking back at the last FC Porto game in Spain, it's worth checking out who the tough guys are. Diogo Costa, Zaidu, Alan Varela and Pepê, who are part of the current squad, all started this match, having been the Brazilian international to point out the attempt of honor in Catalonia.

In addition to the four holders, Cláudio Ramos is the only player who remains in the current sports team among the other elements that have integrated the game card.

After the accounts, the historical picture is far from being the best, so FC Porto has to reverse the trend of recent years and end the disaster of the last visits to Spain. It's time to go after the loss, because in the Champions League each point counts to reach the next stage..

From “Vargonha” up. Arbitration of the Seafarer-FC

Mitchell van der Gaag saw an “inclined field”, in the defeat of the Maritime before FC Porto, by 1-2, in the Stadium of Barreiros, and Francesco Farioli replied. This, under the attention of Benfica (who also did not forget the arbitration of Sporting Braga-Sporting).
