A The National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) said that the ‘rankings’ of schools, today released, stigmatize schools and detract from the work of teachers.
In a statement, Fenprof considered that “rankings translate the inequalities that result from national examinations that rank and eliminate students, disregard healthy learning and continuous evaluation.”.
For the federation, the ‘rankings’ “stimulate individualism, segregate and stigmatize schools, discourage teachers’ work and promote competition to the detriment of cooperation”.
In the first 50 places on the list ordering the grades in the national examinations of public and private schools, only four public schools appear and the first one appears only in 38th place, according to an analysis made by Lusa to the data released by the Ministry of Education.
Fenprof reiterated that, like previous editions, “the intention is only to reinforce the ideological prejudice that the private is good and the public is bad and thus to fatten the education business, also at the expense of the State”.
According to Lusa's analysis, the establishments where the socio-economic context most penalizes students are also those that suffer most from the lack of teachers.
The results of high school students who took tests in 2025 also show that the majority of public schools with better ratings in the exams are those with fewer students in need.
Still, most public schools can counter the impact of poverty on school failure.
Fenprof also argued in the same statement that it is necessary to “deepen investment in the Public School, contrary to the expected cut of more than 80% in the proposal of the State Budget for 2027, allowing to ensure that educational inequalities are attenuated, in particular those resulting from the socioeconomic condition of students”.
The federation welcomes “all teachers who continue to fight daily for a quality education and school for all and for the full training of students”.
