A coalition led by Saudi Arabia, which fights the Houthis in Yemen, claimed today the overthrow of two ballistic missiles fired by the pro-Iran movement towards Riyadh, where eight explosions were recorded.
“ Air defenses intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis terrorist militia towards Riyadh,” said the coalition spokesman, Turki al-Malki, in a publication on social network X.
Earlier this evening, journalists from the France-Presse (AFP) agency heard eight explosions in the Saudi capital, preceded by alert messages sent by the authorities, which indicated an “air threat”.
The Saudi Civil Defense also reported a “potential danger” in Al-Kharj, southeast Riyadh, and in the city of Najran, south of the country.
The group supported by Iran said today, in turn, that a Saudi bombing caused at least 12 deaths in western Yemen.
“ According to a provisional balance sheet, 12 people were killed and three others are in critical condition after an attack by the Saudi enemy”, said the Ministry of Health of the Houthi movement, in a statement quoted by the agency Saba.
The attack hit houses in Taiz Province (west), detailed the same source.
The Houthi and Saudi forces, who support the Yemeni Government, have exchanged attacks on a daily basis since resuming the conflict in Yemen in July, a country that has returned to war in the Middle East after four years of relative calm.
In Yemen, on Wednesday, Saudi bombings, which hit, among other places, a gas station and a market, made at least 14 deaths in the province of Al-Jawf (northwest) on the border, according to the Houthis.
In turn, they targeted the airport of Aden, a city in the south that houses the temporary seat of the government, expelled from the capital, Sana.
According to the spokesperson of government forces, Majed al-Nuzaili, this is the sixth time the airport has been attacked. It informed the existence of injured civilians and material damage.
The military spokesman for the Houthis, Yahya Saree, justified the attack by claiming “the presence of a Saudi military cargo aircraft” “carrying weapons intended to kill the Yemeni people.”.
Saudi Arabia did not comment on these allegations.
The fighting in Yemen made more than 1,600 dead and 275,000 displaced, according to UN data, without any diplomatic solution being seen.
In this serious humanitarian context, about a hundred Yemeni tribal leaders today presented at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva a “code of honor” which commits signatories to protecting civilians and ensuring access to humanitarian aid.
To Tatiana Valovaya, UN Director General in Geneva, “the initiatives with local roots, such as this, cannot replace political efforts, but can make an important contribution in establishing trust and strengthening the foundations on which a lasting peace is sustained.”.
