Born in Lisbon in 1956, Luís Represas was one of the founders of the Trovante in 1976, and the group remained active until the 1990s, editing, for example, “Baile no Bosque” (1981) and “Cais das Colinas” (1983), strongly inspired by traditional Portuguese music.

Luís Represas was released solo in 1993, with the album “Represas”, the result of a trip to Cuba, where it was recorded, and of which are part songs such as “Out of Time”, “Neva sobre a marginal” and “Wizard”. The latest album, “Mirage”, is from 2024.

The story of Luís Represas also includes support for the independence of East Timor. The song “Timor”, with music by João Gil and lyrics by João Monk, which came from the group’s album “One of these days” (1990), he joined the Trovante in 1999 and became one of the main themes of the struggle that led to Timorese independence. The lyrics would be translated into tetum by Xanana Gusmão.

Dams was invited by the then President of the Portuguese Republic Jorge Sampaio to accompany him on his official visit to Timor-Leste in 2000. In 2016, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of East Timor by President Taur Matan Ruak.

In 2005, he was distinguished by the Portuguese State with the Order of Merit – the Commendador degree.

Fausto Bordalo Dias, José Afonso, Carlos do Carmo, Bernardo Sassetti, Pablo Milanés, Ivan Lins, Martinho da Vila, Simone, Jorge Palma, Phil Collins, Compay Segundo, Gilberto Gil and Carlinhos Brown are some of the musicians with whom Luís Represas collaborated.
