A german press reported this week that the Volkswagen Group you may be considering discontinuing the Seat brand by 2029. However, the workers' committee has now shown itself to be “more peaceful” about the future, with the guaranteed employment up to 2030.
The message was transmitted to the EFE news agency by the Chairman of the Workers' Commission, Matías Carnero (UGT), who participated in the meeting of the supervisory board on Thursday (3 September), in which the restructuring plan designed by the Volkswagen director was approved to transform the group and improve efficiency and competitiveness.
After some German media reported that Volkswagen intended to eliminate the Seat brand by the end of 2029 at the latest, the mark clarified that no decision was taken and the supervisory board of Volkswagen did not mention Seat either between the agreements adopted on thursday.
In this context, Carnero explained that at that meeting he demanded “a plan for the Seat”.
Two Spanish “standing” brands
The initial concern with the brand gave rise, after the meeting, to the feeling that the direction of Volkswagen bets on both Cupra and Seat, said Carnero, who now shows himself “more peaceful about the future of the company”.
Furthermore, the person responsible made it clear that one thing is the Seat brand and another is Seat SA, the Spanish subsidiary of the Volkswagen group, which groups the Seat and Cupra brands.
Eletrification is required
While awaiting developments on the Volkswagen Group's restructuring plan and the consequences for Seat, Carnero recalls that Seat has already cut staff in recent years, thanks to an exit plan for workers over 61 years old.
However, insists on the need for an electric platform for the Martorell plant (Spain) to ensure the medium-term workload.
Another 50,000 redundancies in the group
On Thursday, the Volkswagen Supervisory Board (which holds trademarks such as VW, Seat and Cupra, Audi and Porsche) unanimously approved a restructuring plan providing for the elimination of approximately 50,000 jobs worldwide by the end of the decade, twice as expected in a previous plan.
The largest car manufacturer in Europe had already announced the intention to cut 50,000 jobs in Germany by 2030, mainly in the main brand.
A total cut of 100,000 jobs would represent approximately 15 percent of the group's workforce.
