Uma road inspection action this morning detected 157 drivers with an alcohol rate higher than the legal limits, which represents about 15% of drivers monitored and made 34 arrests, announced the GNR.
In a statement, GNR points out that “approximately one in seven” drivers broke the law.
The operation of the National Traffic Unit (UNT) of GNR was carried out in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, “directed to the detection of the main risk behaviors, with a special impact on driving under the influence of alcohol”, and took place simultaneously on Highway No 5 (A5) linking Lisbon to Cascais, and on Highway No 28 (A28), linking Porto to Caminha.
A total of 1,056 drivers were inspected for the two actions, and 32 arrests were made for driving in a state of drunkenness and two for lack of legal qualification to drive. The GNR also carried out 143 counter-orders.
In the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, 100 drivers with excess alcohol were detected, and in Porto, 57.
GNR warns that “driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main risk behaviors in the road environment, compromising key capabilities for safe driving, including perception, reaction time, coordination and assessment and decision-making capacity” and ensures that UNT “will continue to develop special monitoring actions on the main road axes”.
