O Government wants to move forward with funding lines for the protection of livestock activity from attacks of the Iberian wolf, among several other measures in this area, announced today.

“ With a view to harmonizing the presence of the Iberian wolf in areas of livestock activity, Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, has just signed an order that determines priority measures to be implemented by the Institute of Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), to whom a detailed schedule for the operation of these same measures is requested within 30 days”, reads in a statement.

These measures include the “promotion of the ecological restoration of habitats suitable for wolves”, as well as “the increased availability of wild prey to mitigate attacks on herds”.

The tutelage also determined the “technical support to livestock farmers for the adoption of protection measures” and the creation of pilot projects with technological solutions for detection and reduction of attack risks.

“ICNF should also promote the opening and operationalization of financing lines for measures to protect livestock activity, such as support for the maintenance of protection dogs or the installation of seals,” he said, in the same note.

In order to determine which actions should start now and what the appropriate technical follow-up is, the Government indicated that “an incidence mapping based on the georeference of the attacks” of the Iberian wolf should be elaborated and updated, as well as the “respective geospatial analysis” to identify more affected territories.

According to the statement, the ICNF should refer to the Environment and Energy Minister’s office “every two months a situation regarding the implementation of the priority measures, identifying the actions carried out, the degree of implementation, the results achieved and any constraints on their implementation”.

The government recalled the creation of the Alcateia 2025-2035 programme that “establishes an integrated approach to the conservation of the Iberian wolf and the promotion of sustainable coexistence with human activities in the territories where they coincide”.

There have also been efforts to reduce losses on livestock farms, with a strengthening of measures to prevent and protect against attacks, “updating the compensation values when they are not avoided and reducing the payment deadline,” he said.
