O Government of the Azores today considered that the Republic’s €1.25 million support for Azorean farmers due to increased production costs allows “to continue the sector support measures” in the region.
In a statement, the Azorean executive (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) recalls the claims of the region and the Azores Agricultural Federation for the Government of the Republic to support farmers in the costs of agricultural gas oil, in the framework of “extensive support of 10 cents per litre of coloured and marked diesel”.
“ The money now recognised covers consumption from 1 July to 31 December 2026, allowing continuity of measures to support the agricultural sector, in the context of an extraordinary increase in fuel costs”, reads the press release.
The Regional Government considers that national support ensures the “financial framework necessary for the continuity of support for agricultural diesel costs in the second half of 2026” and contributes to “attenuating the pressure of production costs”.
“It is now up to the region to define the rules for the allocation of these support and to adapt the criteria for determining the unit amounts to the regional reality, taking into account the specificities of Azorean agriculture,” said Regional Secretary of Agriculture, António Ventura, quoted in the statement.
The agricultural and forestry sectors of the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira will integrate the additional government support to address the increase in production costs for the period July to December this year.
According to an order from the ministries of the State and Finance and Agriculture and Sea, today published in Diário da República, the Azores receive €1.25 million and Madeira €250,000.
The national executive contextualizes that Decree-Law No 80-A/2026 of 31 March, in its current wording, established exceptional and temporary support of 10 cents per litre of coloured and marked diesel fuel, intended to “compensate the agricultural, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture sectors for the extraordinary increase in fuel prices as a result of the conflict in the Middle East”.
The government points out that the most recent data “confirm, on the one hand, the maintenance of the assumptions of the measure and, on the other hand, the need to extend such support”.
