The man accused of killing another in a pension in Porto, in 2001, and who was on the run until April, was today sentenced to 13 years in prison and to the accessory sentence of expulsion from national territory.

Nthe reading of the judgment, this afternoon, in the Court of S. João Novo, to which the defendant, of Ukrainian nationality, saw by remote way from the prison establishment where he is in custody, the judge president explained that the “explanation” of the defendant on crime “did not appear to be minimally credible”.
The defendant was accused of a crime of murder in the first degree, but explained the magistrate, “the way death was produced, the exact contours do not fit into a crime of murder in the first degree, but rather [in a crime of murder] in the first degree”.
In total, the defendant was sentenced to 13 years of effective imprisonment and the accessory sentence of expulsion from the national territory.
On 14 May 2001, the defendant, according to the Mail of the Morning, killed the victim, of Russian nationality, stabbed, in the bathroom of the room of a pension in Porto, where both lived with two more men.
After the crime, the man fled the country and in 2002 he was declared contuming, which interrupted the time count for the prescription of the crime, having been captured in April this year, in Romania, and extradited to Portugal, where he began to be tried in September.
According to Correio da Manhã, the defendant made statements in the only trial session and claimed not to know the victim, but confirmed having been with her and another colleague drinking on the day of the murder.
The man told us that he fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the night with the victim on his feet, with unbuttoned pants and another man holding his arms, having managed to let go and fled to the bathroom, when he said he realized that the victim was behind him with a knife.
The two men, describes the morning post office, which quotes the defendant, engaged in a fight, having the defendant removed the knife from the victim and struck several blows against the victim.
The defendant fled the country two or three days after the crime and, in court, stated that he had no idea that he had killed the victim and yet apologized to his relatives.
However, the Court did not reap the version of the defendant that it did not know.
“He did not confess, but in fact the explanation was not at all credible. He killed the victim here and when he left the residence he knew perfectly that he had killed him ", said the judge.
