The map of vacancies of the Medical Board 2026 offers 2,338 places for specialized training, with General and Family Medicine being the specialty with the highest number of places, according to a notice published today in Diário da República.

Aproved by dispatch of the Secretary of State for Health Management, of 29 September, the map integrates the tender procedure of admission to the Medical Internship 2026 and defines the vacancies by area of specialization and training institution.
Of the national total, 1,595 vacancies correspond to areas of hospital specialization, while 675 are intended for General and Family Medicine (GMP). There are still 59 vacancies for Public Health and nine for Legal Medicine.
Lisbon and Vale do Tejo concentrates the largest portion, with 237 vacancies, followed by the North, with 226, and the Center, with 121. The Alentejo has 41 vacancies, the Algarve of 24, the Azores of 18 and Madeira of eight.
In total, 2,338 vacancies are open for doctors entering specialized training, distributed by hundreds of public and private institutions from north to south of the country and the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores.
Internal Medicine (216 vacancies), Pediatrics (110) and Anesthesiology (102) are specialties with more hospital vacancies.
Psychiatry (82), General Surgery (72), Gynecology/Obstetrics (71), Orthopedics (70), Intensive Medicine (69), Clinical Pathology (59), Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (52), Medical Oncology (50), Radiology (47), Cardiology (44), and Emergency Medicine (42).
At the opposite extreme, some areas have a very small number of places. Pediatric Cardiology and Sports Medicine have only one vacancy each, while Thoracic Surgery provides two and Cardiac Surgery three.
Among the institutions with vacancies are the Hospital de Santa Maria, Hospital de São José, ULS Lisbon Oeste, ULS Amadora/Sintra, ULS Almada/Seixal, ULS Loures/Odivelas, Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa and several private hospitals.
The North also has a significant offer, with vacancies distributed by institutions such as the São João HLS, Santo António HLS, Braga ULS, Gaia/Espinho ULS, Matosinhos ULS and Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto.
In the Center, we highlight the ULS Coimbra, ULS Region of Aveiro, ULS Region of Leiria and ULS Viseu Dão-Lafões, among other institutions.
The map also includes vacancies in the Azores and Madeira, covering several specialties.
In the Azores, for example, there are vacancies in General and Family Medicine, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and other areas.
In Madeira, Hospital Nélio Mendonça receives vacancies in various specialties, while General and Family Medicine includes places in various health centers in the region.
The map now published by the ACSS will serve as a basis for the process of choice of specialized training within the scope of the Medical Internship 2026.
Last year's map had 2,330 vacancies, minus eight than in 2026.
