“ I would say that the Iranian state media have so far not provided a truly reliable account of what happened in this conflict, so I am extremely skeptical about it,” J.D. Vance said to the press in response to a question about an American air raid that took place on Tuesday in Kuhestak (South Iran) which will have, according to the Iranian authorities, hit a house where a wedding ceremony took place.

JD Vance added that, in spite of everything, the United States was conducting “a thorough investigation”.

Hours earlier, Iran’s leader of the Revolutionary Guard, Ahmad Vahidi, vowed to avenge two women and two children who died in this attack, which also caused at least 68 wounded.

Vance insisted that the United States does not have “conclusive information in one sense or another”.

“ We're investigating this because it's obviously important to us. We want to know what happened and if we make mistakes — and this is where a big difference lies between us and Iran — our army learns from them to try to improve. That is why we are conducting an exhaustive investigation,” he explained.

Tehran compared the attack to those who caused the death of 168 students and teachers in the city of Minab, in the south of the country, and to another who left 21 dead in the Lamerd region, also in the south, on the first day of the war, on 28 February.

“ These brutal war crimes, which constitute a serious violation of the fundamental principles of international law, remind us of previous crimes committed by American Zionists over the past year and a half, including those of Minab and Lamerd”, said the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

The war between Iran and the United States has intensified in recent days, soon after six months of conflict, with the most violent US attacks in more than a month against five Iranian provinces, which caused about 20 deaths, according to Tehran.

Vance, who spoke at a press conference in the White House, also argued that maritime oil and gas traffic in the Strait of Ormuz had “almost” recovered levels before the conflict with the Islamic Republic began.

“ If we went back three months in time with regard to oil and gas coming out of the Strait of Ormuz due to Iranian threats, there was practically nothing. Now, we are almost back to the pre-conflict situation ", argued the U.S. Vice President.

Both Tehran and Washington claim control of the strait.

Washington and Tehran agreed on 17 June a memorandum of understanding, which included an immediate ceasefire, the reopening of the Ormuz Strait to commercial navigation and the lifting of the naval blockade imposed by the United States to Iran's ports.

This agreement ended up collapsing and the United States and Iran resumed their naval blockades without continuing the negotiations provided for in the Memorandum to reach a definitive peace agreement, the two-month deadline of which expired.

With no prospect of a return to dialogue, the United States has held several air raids since Sunday against Iran, which has responded with drone and missile launches against neighbouring Gulf countries.

Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the ongoing economic operation against Iran, which includes sanctions on individuals and entities developing trade relations with Tehran, does not intend to overthrow the regime, but to force it to conclude an agreement in negotiating venue.
