“ Sfor three years now, we have also had a deep reflection on the detonator of this crisis, which was the attack by Hamas, and which we strongly condemn, [as well] all expressions of terrorism, blatant disregard for human rights,” Montenegro said, in statements at the arrival of a summit of the countries of the south of the European Union (EU) in Split, Croatia.
According to the Prime Minister, “the EU has also been very insistent and persistent in its intervention to lead this whole situation to a rapid, diplomatic resolution, with the ceasefire that is currently taking place, up to a humanitarian point, than what reality has shown us”.
“ But at the same time, it must be acknowledged that, from a global point of view, the international community has been unable to accelerate the stabilisation of the region. Of course, we remain very committed to making our contribution, often mediating some solutions and some decision-making frameworks”, he added.
Louis Montenegro is accompanied in Split by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who, in a message published on social network X, had expressed Portuguese solidarity with the Israeli people, when three years of the Hamas attack in Israel, which considered the most serious terrorist anti-Semitic massacre after the holocaust.
“Today they spend three years on the most serious anti-Semitic terrorist massacre after the ‘Shoah’,” writes Paulo Rangel, in a message on social network X, expressing Portugal’s solidarity with the families of the victims – “including the Portuguese” – and the Israeli people.
In the message, Paulo Rangel also considers that October 7, 2023 cannot be forgotten and that “anti-Semitism must always be condemned and combated”.
Hamas' attack of October 7, 2023 in Israel, in a place where an electronic music festival took place, caused the death of 1,200 people and more than 251 people were abducted.
This attack triggered a devastating war in Gaza, which caused more than 74,000 deaths, leaving much of the territory in ruins and its population of two million people living in precarious conditions.
An independent UN expert committee, as well as Israeli human rights organisations and international entities such as Amnesty International, concluded that Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip constitute a genocide against the Palestinian people.
