Jwith the 41-year advance unavailable to return to represent the team of ‘quinas’, Jesus' choices for the duels with Denmark in Braga on 14 November, and Wales in Cardiff on 17 at the close of group A4, will be known at a press conference scheduled for 12:00 in Football City, Oeiras.
Until Thursday, the great doubt on the national selector's call list would be the presence or not of Cristiano Ronaldo, but the now former captain of Portugal anticipated and announced the end of his international career after 23 years, 234 games and 146 goals.
In this League of Nations, in which Portugal holds the title, Ronaldo held the debut in front of Wales (1-0), in Alvalade, and unused alternate in Oslo, Norway (2-1), despite having been long minutes warming off the field.
On September 30, 24 hours before the duel with Denmark, which Portugal would win (4-2), Ronaldo left the national team stage in Copenhagen, in shock with Jorge Jesus, ending just over a month later by confirming the ‘goodbye’ to Portugal.
With the ‘case’ Ronaldo closed, Jesus will now be 100% focused on ensuring the first place of Group A4, already after having secured the clearance for the final rooms in early October with Norway (2-1), in Porto.
The 72-year-old coach already knows he won't be able to count on Francisco Conceição, who received a three-game suspension for being expelled from Norway, a punishment that was reinforced by UEFA due to the player's bad behavior after seeing the red card.
The João Cancelo side, suspended for a match due to the accumulation of yellows, can be spared by the national selector, while the lefty Nuno Mendes is in doubt due to physical problems, and opens a door to a possible surprise on the sides.
Matheus Nunes, performing regularly in Manchester City, may return, although playing right, which would require a possible adaptation of Diogo Dalot or Cancelo, or Jesus might even surprise with a new face.
Gustavo Varela, with 11 goals in games at Monza and one of the best markers in Italy, can live the first call, just now with the position left by Ronaldo, in a list in which Rodrigo Mora, in great form of Rome, may also be.
In defense, Gonçalo Inácio, without any minute in the September stage, may have his place at risk, with António Silva, the absolute holder of Bournemouth, to be able to be near the return.
