“Twe also did not exclude the resumption of the trilateral format, but it is still too early to talk about the site and specific dates”, said the spokesman of the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, to the media.
Peskov argued that “any attempt (...) is a step towards peace” and thanked US negotiators.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow on Saturday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, and on Sunday they first went to Kyiv, where they met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to a senior head of the Ukrainian presidency, the envoys of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, presented to both heads of state new “more effective” proposals to end the war in Ukraine, initiated by the Russian invasion of the neighbouring country on 24 February 2022.
The source, quoted by the French news agency AFP, did not, however, need what these proposals were.
The mediation efforts undertaken by the United States since Donald Trump's return to the White House for a second presidential term in January 2025 led to several rounds of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in 2025, but they did not produce results, and the process has been stagnant since the start of the Middle East war on 28 February this year.
In the previous negotiating rounds, Moscow and Kyiv held their positions globally, and the process stuck on the issue of Ukraine's surrender of the Ukrainian territories whose annexation Russia claims.
Zelensky stated on Sunday to fear that the war could continue this winter, a critical period during which the country runs the risk of suffering another wave of devastating Russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector.
