“ Mwe are deeply concerned about the continuing escalation of tensions in the Middle East and, recalling our respective national positions, we call for maximum restraint and avoid actions that may further aggravate the situation,” according to the New Delhi Declaration, signed by the 11 leaders of the BRICS and cited by the Spanish news agency EFE.
The document, approved unanimously in the main room of the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi, also requires the protection of civilians and civil infrastructure, as well as respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
Among the 140 points of the New Delhi Declaration, BRICS leaders stressed, even though not to mention the Strait of Ormuz, which is essential “to maintain the steady flow of global trade, supply chains and energy”.
Other points of the declaration refer to the requirement to eliminate measures that these countries consider illegal: “We condemn the imposition of unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law and reiterate that such measures, including, among other forms, unilateral and secondary economic sanctions, have profound negative implications for human rights.”.
The adoption of this document put an end to some issues that were still open before the meeting of leaders, with consensus being the main challenge of this meeting, since 11 countries with distinct positions on major international conflicts such as the war in the Middle East and Ukraine were represented.
The block integrates Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
