O labour leader ensured through a statement that his government is committed to protecting citizens from a “vil hatred” and stressed that the attacks of the terrorist organization Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023 had an impact around the world.
“ In the years that followed, we have seen an alarming increase in anti-Semitic behaviour in the United Kingdom,” the head of the government stressed, recalling the attack a year ago on a synagogue in Manchester (North England), in which two faithful died after being stabbed by the British citizen of Syrian origin Jihad Al-Shamie, who was shot down by the police.
“ I want the British Jewish community to hear this directly from me: we are with you. We will not tolerate abuse or violence against you in any form; neither on our streets, nor on the Internet, nor in our schools or universities”, he said.
Burnham stressed that the British Government is financing measures to protect synagogues, schools and community centres, and promised to combat anti-Semitism with “firmity”.
It also made it clear that the government continues to work for a two-state solution — Israel and Palestine — so that both sides can live in peace and security.
“ An attack on the Jewish community in the UK is an attack on all of us. Anti-Semitism has no place in this country and we will do everything in our power to eradicate it,” he said.
