Medieval Market takes Valença on a trip to the year 1509

“ Durante three days, the streets and spaces of Fortaleza will be occupied by merchants, artisans, musicians, knights and medieval characters, in a program that combines tradition, culture and entertainment ", describes, in an informative note published on social networks, the Câmara de Valença, in the district of Viana do Castelo.

The medieval market will feature handicrafts, arts and crafts, dances, music, theatre, gastronomy, fire shows and horseback tournaments, “creating an immersive experience for all ages,” says the municipality.

The invitation of the chamber is “to live history” and “to visit Fortaleza, to discover the crafts of other times, to know the traditions, to taste the gastronomy and to feel the atmosphere of a medieval Valença”.

As for the recreation of the presence of Duarte de Armas in Valença, in 1509, the municipality recalls that the squire of the House of King D. Manuel I “went through the fortresses of the border by royal determination, recording in drawings and plants its state and configuration”.

“ More than five centuries later, his look on Valença serves as inspiration for a new journey in time”, he adds.

The chamber recalls that Valença “was one of the strong squares represented in the famous Book of Fortalezas”, referring to a five-year manuscript by Duarte de Armas, executed on the initiative of King Manuel I.

The Fortress of Valença is a national monument since March 14, 1928 and is in the process of classification as World Heritage by UNESCO, under the project Abaluartadas Fortalezas da Raia, which brings together the municipalities of Valença, Almeida and Marvão.
