A rehabilitation of the station Praça de España, of the Blue line, improving access and conditions of comfort and use, with preservation of the original architectural moth, was completed on Friday, informed today the Metropolitan of Lisbon.

“The intervention, started on July 13, contemplated the complete replacement of the station’s floors, covering the North and South atriums and the loading docks, as well as painting, cleaning and conservation of spaces,” the carrier revealed.

In a statement, the Metropolitan added that “two new elevators were also installed in the North lobby, reinforcing accessibility conditions and facilitating the use of the station by people with conditioned mobility”.

The Praça de España station, inaugurated on December 29, 1959, is part of the original Lisbon metro network and the intervention “now completed has enabled modernizing and valuing its spaces, maintaining the architectural and plastic characteristics that are part of its identity and history”.

According to the company, the Praça de España station assumes “special importance in mobility” of the city, serving daily an area with “high concentration of services, health equipment, cultural spaces and commercial activities”, namely the Portuguese Oncology Institute (IPO), the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, companies and cultural institutions.

The works, which took place in three and a half months, involved “temporary conditions in the movement and access to the station”, such as the phased closure of the docks and atriums.

During the entire intervention period, the station remained in operation, with “the necessary operational adaptations to ensure the safety of passengers and workers”.

This metro stop, with the complete completion of the work, last Friday, resumes normal operation, with all available accesses and quays, without the conditions associated with the intervention.

The intervention, referred to in the note, integrates the Lisbon Metropolitan strategy of “modernization, conservation and valorization of existing stations, seeking to continuously improve the quality of the service provided and make the network more accessible, comfortable and inclusive”.

In addition, the company reaffirmed its commitment to “improving passenger experience and promoting public transport as an essential element for more sustainable urban mobility”.

The Lisbon Metropolitan operates daily with four lines: Yellow (Rato-Odivelas), Green (Calheiras do Sodré), Blue (Reboleira-Santa Apolónia) and Red (Aeroporto-São Sebastião). Under normal operating conditions, the metro operates between 06:30 and 01:00.
