Norris performed his best lap in 1.27.470 minutes, beating fellow countryman George Russell (Mercedes) for 0.204 seconds and Italian Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), already world champion, for 0.625 seconds.

It was the 20th pole position of McLaren's pilot's career, fourth of the season and third consecutive in the Brazilian circuit, where he returned to be the fastest in a session marked by the difficult conditions of the track.

Despite the second half, Russell will be penalized in five positions on the grid due to the replacement of components of the drive unit, allowing Antonelli to drop alongside Norris in the first line.

The Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), fourth in qualification, also has a penalty, of 10 places. New Zealander Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) and German Nico Hülkenberg (Audi), fifth and sixth fastest, respectively, will occupy the second line of the grid.

The rain began to fall after the last session of free training and intensified when the pilots were preparing to discuss the qualification. The running direction showed the red flag just over two minutes after the start, facing the accumulation of water and the risk of watering.

A long wait followed, with inspections of the runway by the safety car and work of the commissioners to remove the water. The session, initiated at 15:00 locals, was not resumed until 16:26, with the pilots still obliged to deal with little adherence and reduced visibility.

The two Brazilians on the track eventually suffered accidents. Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi) hit in the first phase of the qualification, while the rookie Rafael Câmara (Haas), who replaces French Esteban Ocon, reached the second, but also left the track, causing further interruption.

The Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who already had a penalty that sent it to the bottom of the grid due to changes in components in the drive unit, did not record time in the second phase. In the final pole discussion, Russell still went through the lead, but Norris responded before the rain intensified again.

The main race is held this Sunday, starting at 17:00 in Lisbon.
