At his daily press conference, Stéphane Dujarric indicated that the UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Support Coordinator Tom Fletcher made available another $500,000 (EUR 430.000) to add up to the two million (EUR 1.7 million) already forwarded by the UN Central Emergency Response Fund to Nepal.
The new package was adopted while the Nepali organisation and government work together to issue an emergency humanitarian call.
On Wednesday, Dujarric said that the emergency plan, whose goal is to obtain and coordinate funds sent by the international community to face this crisis, will last four months, but today did not provide further details.
“ We are cooperating with the district authorities to strengthen coordination and evaluate the needs of communities affected by floods,” he noted.
On August 26, a huge flood hit the border region between Nepal and Tibet (China), making at least 1,280 dead and 5,624 missing, according to the latest official accounts, today updated.
The floods caused the level of the waters of the Trishuli River to rise between 15 and 18 meters above normal, devastating settlements along a 72-kilometre stretch of its shores.
“ Our humanitarian colleagues report that access remains difficult. The destruction of roads and bridges requires to carry out operations mainly by air, which is expensive ", needed the spokesman of António Guterres.
However, he added that “almost all” damaged telecommunications networks are about to start up again.
