The Iranian parliament, or Majlis, announced today that it had received a proposal as a matter of urgency to approve Iran's withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), in response to the attacks of the United States and Israel.

Aat the same time, the Iranian Military Staff has again warned the United States that it will respond to any attack with “devasting bombings” against the US military bases in the region.
“ Recently, several representatives presented a three-point plan for the withdrawal of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which should be included on the agenda by the Bureau because, in view of the country’s specific conditions, continuing in the NPT only harms the country,” said Iranian deputy Ali Hayideligani in statements quoted by the Iranian daily ‘Sharg’.
Also the director of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, Ibrahim Azizi, argued that the exit option of the NPT “is on the table”.
“ Plans have been prepared in parliament for the withdrawal of the NPT. This plan was signed by several representatives, but in order for it to be an official decision, coordination and consolidation of the pillars of the system is needed”, he explained.
“ If one day the pillars of the Islamic system come to the conclusion that membership in the NPT is no longer beneficial, but harmful, they will of course take the appropriate decisions,” he added.
Iran signed the NPT in 1968 and ratified it in 1970. Its signature implies accepting the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure that the use of nuclear energy is exclusively peaceful, thus renouncing the development of nuclear weapons.
On the other hand, in a statement, the Iranian army warned that it will respond to any attack with “devasting bombings” after allegedly receiving information that Washington will resume combat operations with the support of Middle East countries.
“ We warn that any attack by the United States against Iran will cause continuous and devastating bombings against all US bases and interests throughout the region without exception,” the Iranian Army said.
The Iranian General Staff stated that it has information that indicates that the United States will “retake action against the Islamic Republic” after receiving “green light” from countries in the region at a meeting in Europe.
“If the countries of the region align themselves with the aggression of the Great Satan (USA) against a powerful and sovereign Iran, they will all be considered accomplices of this evil and will no longer be able to expect moderation or indulgence from the powerful armed forces of Iran,” the Iranian Armed Forces assured.
The war between Iran and the United States is at an impasse almost seven months after its start, with occasional attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Ormuz and without a clear way out of the conflict.
In early August, President Donald Trump postponed the resumption of large-scale combat operations after Saudi Arabia and Qatar expressed fear that Iran would bomb oil and gas installations in the region in retaliation.
This week, Trump said that he does not yet know whether or not to resume massive attacks to try to end the conflict or end the Islamic Republic, according to Axios.
