A retrospective begins on the 11th, with the exhibition of “Non or the vain glory of command”, by Manoel de Oliveira, and will count on the presence of the producer at various times to talk to spectators and guests. The French actress and director Fanny Ardant will also participate in the first moments of this cycle, in September, mentions a note from the Cinemateca on the programming from September to December, today released.

“ The rent of the Portuguese Cinemateca opens, and extends, with a focus on notable names of international cinema. From directors (Martin Scorsese, Noémia Delgado, Margaret Tait, Lino Brocka, Rita Azevedo Gomes, Frank Borzage, Hiroshi Shimizu) to actresses such as Brigitte Bardot, and film producers (Paulo Branco). The figures highlighted and celebrated have, in common, a remarkable role carved by his works ", reads in the announcement of programming.

Martin Scorsese, with the display of “The Irish”, is another of the directors highlighted in September. There will also be partnerships already announced in collaboration with MOTELX, Queer Lisboa and Operafest festivals.

In October, the protagonists are three great figures of European cinema: Portuguese director Noémia Delgado, Scottish Margaret Tait and actress Brigitte Bardot, who died in December last year.

The first retrospective is dedicated to Bardot, one of Nouvelle Vague's biggest icons and French screens in the 1950s and 1960s.

In the context of the presentation of the work of women “whose work insists on staying away from the cinematic canon”, but who deserves all the attention, the Cinemateca will display “Máscaras”, by Noémia Delgado, “film that made it known” the director “as the greatest author of an ethnographic and poetic cinema, along with a work largely made for television”.

From the filmmaker will also be shown the series “Fantastic Tales”, with the Cinemateca dedicating it “an extremely complete retrospective, after the exhibition that was dedicated to it in 2024”.

“Connected to the generation of Cinema Novo Português”, the practice of Noémia Delgado “also attended the plastic arts and writing”. “His work is marked by many writers, who adapt or whose work dedicates part of his films, and this program will also result in the publication of an edition around him,” says Cinemateca.

Margaret Tait will also have a retrospective dedicated to her filmography in October in a film show made between the 1950s and 1990s, which the director signed with names such as Luke Fowler, Ute Aurand and Peter Todd. Margaret Tait will be in Lisbon following the cycle, the Cinemateca has advanced.

October will also make known the work of Lino Brocka, “focus of an ambitious retrospective organized with Doclisboa, in dialogue with Khavn De La Cruz, multifaceted Filipino artist and expert in the work” of the filmmaker.

With a “very unknown and practically unprecedented work in Portugal”, Brocka will also be the target of a “Cadernos da Cinemateca”, which follows the cycle.

In November, it will be Rita Azevedo Gomes' turn to occupy the guest director's chair, in a program that results from the collaboration with the filmmaker for the projection of her films paired with titles chosen by him, in a cinematic dialogue. This program has the director, director, actor, translator, musician and critic Pierre Léon, among other guests, who at the time will show in Portugal his film “Deus Rémi, Deux”, under the Lisbon Film Festival (LEFFEST).

Frank Borzage, “master of the melodrama, with a journey that began in the pioneers’ time and ended in the early 1960s”, will also have a retrospective, in November, “which will recover many of the titles of the rather comprehensive retrospective that was dedicated to him in the early 1990s”.

“ Given the magnitude of the director's work, the cycle will continue until January 2027, and will have the publication of an edition around it ", stresses the Cinemateca.

For December, the first part of Hiroshi Shimizu, “certainly one of the most important moments of the 2026-2027 programming,” the Cinemateca said.

“ After Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa and Naruse, it is time to show the work of one of the masters of Japanese cinema, with an extraordinarily comprehensive program (it will be the second largest ever show outside Japan after the scheduled by Cinémathèque Française and with films that were not shown there) — counting on the collaboration of the National Film Archive of Japan”, according to the Cinemateca statement.

In December 2026, with second tickets planned for January and March 2027, the program will feature expert guests, such as journalist and programmer Clément Rauger, who has already collaborated with Cinémathèque Française in the organization of retrospective directors such as Kenji Misumi, Tai Kato and Hiroshi Shimizu. A catalogue will also be published on this initiative.

In the Cinemateca program, the cycle “Travel to the End of the Change” will continue, marking the centenary of the premiere of the first sound film, “The Jazz Singer”, which took place in October 1927.

By the end of this year, the Cinemateca plans three sessions a month dedicated “to classics and films recovered from oblivion”, because the time of silent cinema “is still an active field of work in the field of ‘archaeology’ of cinema, and the work of recomposition and restoration, which periodically brings, as paradoxical as it seems, ‘novities’ and the rediscovery of films that no one has seen for over a hundred years. A journey to the end of the mute, or to the sweetness of the days before the sound revolution: this is the proposal”.
