Dand according to the Greek weather service, some 22,000 lightnings were recorded on the island and south of the sea. He's been ape in the last 24 hours.

Time began to stabilize today, with less intense rains, but the trail of destruction includes damage to homes, infrastructure, plantations and animals.

As flood water retreats, the extent of the damage, which is still being assessed, becomes clearer, the Greek public broadcaster ERT said.

The storm, which took away the life of an 82-year-old farmer in the Rethymno region in the center of Crete, on Wednesday night, devastated the island in full tourist season, with a large number of visitors.

The huge amounts of rain – in some areas reaching 500 liters per square metre, equivalent to an entire year – have not been absorbed into the soil, causing serious flooding and widespread destruction.

Teams of regional experts are working against time to repair extensive damage to the power grid and remove debris from the streets and roads.

The situation is particularly critical on the Lasithi plateau, where large areas were covered by tons of mud and water, severely impacting the production of potatoes, vegetables and other crops.

Many residents and farmers have not yet been able to access their properties to assess the extent of the damage and wait for the water to go down.

In other places, such as Gouves (Hersonissos municipality), where floods, along with gusts of wind over 80 kilometers per hour, dragged cars to sea, cleaning and rebuilding efforts began gradually.

Bad weather also affected the island of Rhodes, where on Friday a 58-year-old German tourist died after being struck by lightning, who also slightly injured her husband.
