O TikTok began to be target of criticism shortly after hospitalisation of Perez Hilton, a content creator who made a live broadcast through the social network where he seems to be self-mutilating.
Many internet users were shocked that the transmission was not interrupted earlier, criticising TikTok for the delay in taking measures to prevent users of the platform from being exposed to this type of content.
Well, TikTok publicly reacted to the controversy in statements sent to wired magazine and attributed the delay in decision-making to a “moderator error”. Moreover, the company notes that the transmission lasted only 15 minutes, thus contradicting the information circulating and pointing out that the transmission had remained active for more than 30 minutes.
TikTok explained to the publication that its moderation systems signaled the live transmission a few minutes after it started, noting that the delay in interrupting and removing the account was due to such a “moderator error”. The company notes that the platform also prevented Hilton from starting new transmissions after the first was interrupted, stating that attempts were cancelled in less than 90 seconds.
As regards the involvement of the competent authorities, TikTok explains that they were contacted shortly after the original transmission was signalled by their internal systems.
However, TikTok did not share details about the nature of the error that was committed during this process or the steps that would have to be taken and that postponed the interruption of this Perez Hilton transmission.
