Ruben Amorim generates distrust: “AC Milan cannot be mediocre”

Zvonimir Boban gave an extensive interview to the Italian Rai Radio 1 on Monday, in which he took the opportunity to ‘put the points in the is’ about the controversy generated by the fact that, in the middle of the week, at the Trento Sports Festival, he stressed that AC Milan is not Napoli, so he cannot settle for a discharge for the Champions League.

“ I didn't realize what I said so special. I said AC Milan should aim to win, but I heard about ‘Boban poison’. You don't understand how much the idea of what AC Milan and its supporters should be changed. We cannot be mediocre”, started by affirming the former Croatian international, who stood out in the service of the club, between 1992 and 2001.

“ If we accept that the highest ambition is the discharge for the Champions League every year, then I did not realize anything of what they taught me in Italy, nor of what my father gave me, seeing [Gianni] Rivera and dreaming that one day, as a footballer, I could repeat what he did,” he added.

In this sense, the average history, 57 years old, asked Ruben Amorim more: “At the moment, AC Milan is holding on, even if the game does not seem to promise much. This 3x5x2 system, which turns into a 5x2x3 or a 3x4x3, becomes, in the end, a defensive line of five men, with players in the wings who massacre each other”.

“It’s a little illogical. If Amorim, with the positive spirit he has brought, succeeds in reaching the end, in the Europe League, despite a low-deep squad, we will all be satisfied. I doubt, as doubts a large part of Italian football, that analyzes the situation with greater depth and qualities. It is doubtful”, completed.

Zvonimir Boban assumed, however, that he is still “early” to draw conclusions about the work carried out by Ruben Amorim at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza: “As I said, I don’t like playing three in defense. The races become long and tiresome, the lines break and the connection becomes harder to maintain during the 90 minutes”.

“ It is necessary to have a great capacity in alternations to maintain quality in the wings, in the sides and in the midfield. The game with Lecce [victory, by 3-0] went better than the games in which AC Milan suffered a lot, but we are only at the beginning of the process”, analyzed the man who held the position of sports leader of the rossneri, between 2019 and 2020.

“ Even if all games seem to bring years of discussion, given the world we live in, where there's so much to talk and read, we need to give it time. He has to convince us all with results, and it is normal that he needs consistency and time to work”, he concluded, in a way of warning to the Portuguese coach.
