“ Vto praise our teachers is to value our own Republic ", says António José Seguro.

“ Without teachers, there wouldn't be the country we know today, or the one we want to build. There's no Republic without schools. There's no school without valued teachers. To value teachers is to take care of the future of our Republic ", reinforces the head of state.

This message was released this morning, before the beginning of the commemorative ceremony of the Implantation of the Republic, which is scheduled for 10:30, in Praça do Município, in Lisbon.

On World Teachers’ Day, the President of the Republic gives “a special greeting to teachers and teachers” who teach in schools throughout the country and teach Portuguese abroad.

“ Today we celebrate our Republic, our country, Portugal. The Republic is synonymous with equality, meaning that everyone counts equally. The school is where this promise of equal treatment wins face. In the face of a teacher, of a teacher”, reads in the note.

António José Seguro argues that “teaching is much more than conveying knowledge” and praises the role of teachers, who “encourage when doubt settles” and who “know how to open horizons to those born with less opportunities”.

“ Therefore, to value our teachers is to value our own Republic. Every time a teacher changes the fate of one of us, equality ceases to be a promise and becomes a reality”, he defends.

“ Those who gave us a future on 5 October 1910 also knew that freedom and equality could only avenge Portugal through the common will to transform the country through school. Today Portugal reaffirms that its future passes through school and its teachers. We know that there are always adversities to overcome in school and in education, but we also know that we owe much to teachers ", adds.
