O Stadium José Alvalade will be the stage, at the beginning of Saturday night, of a new era, due to the premiere, in the Sporting substitute bank, Paulo Fonseca, the man elected by the direction led by Frederico Varandas to face the resignation of Rui Borges, who did not resist a start of sports season 2026/27 below expectations.
Recently, the ‘green and white ship’ seems to have found a new direction, due to the consecutive victories over Maritime (which earned access to the ‘final four’ of the League Cup), Casa Pia (for the I League) and Shakhtar Donetsk (already with the interim, Tiago Fernandes, at the helm), but it will now be the ideal trajectory that will begin to be traced.
Lions go to the game knowing beforehand that they have no margin of error, as they arrive at the 11th day of the national championship in the third position of the table, with 21 points, as many as Santa Clara, minus nine than the leader, FC Porto, and less four than the second ranked Benfica.
Since all these opponents will only go to play on Sunday, they have in hand a golden opportunity to put pressure, and a possible victory with the right to good performance would also ease the tension of the last weeks, and open the way for a break for much quieter international commitments.
From the front, the Portuguese vice-champions in title will have a set commanded by Vasco Botelho da Costa which, curiously enough, did not begin at all the season, but which comes from a moralizing moment, since, for the first time, achieved triumphs followed, on Estoril and Estrela da Amadora, both by the minimum margin.
Sporting-Moreirense has an initial whistle scheduled for 8.30 p.m. (Hour of Continental Portugal), and will be judged by João Gonçalves of the Porto Football Association, which will have as assistants Pedro Ribeiro and Miguel Martins, as fourth referee Márcio Torres, as VAR João Casegas and as AVAR Marco Vieira.
Coaches in direct speech
Paulo Fonseca
A short time of preparation: “ We expect difficulties. I had the opportunity to observe Moreirense, it's a team that, with space, has quality. You have a system of your own. Actually, I don't know what system it comes in, because it has this variability. We prepared ourselves in the best way. The weather wasn't long, but the team was fine. You understand what I mean. Now we have to be on a good level, because Moreirense is never an easy team.”.
Sporting champion: “ I don't like to create expectations in people when we have a scenario like what we have. Naturally, I believe in our team a lot. We'll play to play, regardless of the opponent, but it's hard. Personally, if you didn't believe me, you wouldn't be here. After these three days of work, I start to believe more. It is very difficult, but let’s work on thinking about the next game, without losing sight of this possibility”.
Pressure not to have triumphed in FC Porto and AC Milan: “I realize that people only hold back when there is no success, it is normal, but I understand even more, because people did not follow my career out there. Sporadially, one game or another, but if you ask me how to play it, most people don't know. What you remember is the times of FC Porto, less Sporting Braga and Paços de Ferreira, but I think it's normal. The biggest pressure there is is the one I put on myself. I know I come to a winning club, to a club that has to fight to win, but if I am here, it’s because I feel like I’m ready”.
Vasco Botelho da Costa
Renovated sporting: “ The standards of a team that competes for the title are always the same. They'll want to individualize the pressure, they'll be very aggressive. Regardless of the structure, they'll want to attack and dominate. ... In this type of games, we are forced, in many moments, to defend, but we want to demonstrate that we can take to games of this dimension the offensive growth of other games”.
What changes with Paulo Fonseca: “The Sporting team allows you to do whatever you want. We know what his principles will be. That's the most important thing to us. At the structural level, we already have some baggage to know how to behave, regardless of how the ‘parts’ are ‘fixed’”.
Never won against 'big': “ The evaluation of a coach's work are the final classifications, the objectives achieved. If I choose to lose all the games with the 'big' and win all the other teams, it is difficult not to have a European clearance with that kind of score. I don't give a damn about that. The focus here is Moreirense”
